Sanlam General Agricultural Insurance Products are designed to protect farmers against financial losses and give farmers peace of mind against these risks and uncertainties.
1. Multi-Perils Crop Insurance
This product provide cover to the crop farm (arable crops and tree crops or cash crops) against physical loss or damage to the crops from germination up to physiological maturity caused directly by the following perils: fire, drought, flood, windstorm damage, pest and diseases, lightning and aircraft damage.
The sum insured is the total cost of production for the production cycle. It includes cost of land clearing, land preparation, cost of inputs, weeding, fertilizer application, labor and other miscellaneous costs.
The premium rate is dependent the size of the farm on will be influenced on the level of agronomic practice.
2. Poultry Insurance
The poultry insurance cover broilers, layers, parent stock, grand parent stock, cockerel, turkey and ornamental birds against death or mortality arising from the following perils: disease incident, accident, flooding, fire, lightning, ant invasion and windstorm damage.
Sum insured is the cost of production for the rearing period and it include feeding cost, medication, vaccination, labor, utility and other miscellaneous cost. The sum insured could also be the market value of the birds at table size or at point of lay.
The premium rate is a function of the type of bird, the rearing period, bio-security measures in place, farm size and farm management practice.
3. Livestock Insurance
This product insures the proposed livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, dogs and zoo animals) against death or mortality against the following perils: Disease outbreak, accident, fire, lightning, windstorm damage, snake bite and flood damage. The policy will pay the value of the animal at the time of death.
We provide African swine and fever extension upon request as an additional option to standard policy cover.
The sum insured is the acquisition cost of animal (purchase cost of animal) and the maintenance cost (feeding, medication, vaccination, labor and other miscellaneous cost).
The premium rates will vary depending on the type and category of livestock to be insured. Types of livestock we insure include but not limited to stock cattle, pigs, dogs, pets and other domestic animals, and zoo animals.
4. Fish Farm Insurance
This product protects the fish farm against the death of the fishes as a result of diseases, flood, windstorm damage, fire and lightning. The policy can also be extended to cover pond collapse and theft and fire damage to the fishing accessories.
The sum insured is the total cost of production up to marketable size and it includes feeding cost, labor, medication and other miscellaneous costs.
5. Area Yield Index Insurance
The area yield index insurance protects the farmer against named perils that affect crop yield. The perils covered include: Windstorm, excessive rainfall, fire, drought, flood, frost, hail, pest and diseases.
Under this policy farmers are grouped into agro-ecological zones or unit area of insurance. The sum insured is the economies of production EOP or the cost of production in the agro-ecological zone.
6. Weather Index Insurance
This is a short duration cover that protects the farmer against germination failure resulting from excessive rainfall or drought . Farmers are able to receive payouts early in the season, allowing for re-planting of seeds and enabling farmers to effectively harvest commodities in the same season.
The sum insured is the economy of production (EOP) for the duration of the policy.
7. Insurance for Farm Property and Produce
Farm property and produce are covered under our combined fire and burglary policy. Goods in transit insurance can be granted for farm produce in transit as an extension.
The policy protects the farm property and produce against physical loss or damage as a result of fire, burglary/housebreaking, lightning, windstorm, impact damage, explosion and flood.
The sum insured is the value of the farm property and produce. The rate for goods in transit extension depend on the goods being carried.
