What is Excess?

It is the contribution of the insured to each claim on an insurance policy. This is a standard insurance clause that is charged as a percentage of the claim. It makes the insured act as though uninsured.

However, most companies allow the insured to buy back the excess, which is referred to as ''EXCESS BUY BACK (EBB)'' on their Motor insurance policy. This means that the insured does not have to pay a part of the claim any time a claim is made. The cost for the EBB is usually a fraction of the premium payable.

What is constructive total loss and when does it apply?

If the estimate of repairs is equal to or greater than 60% of the vehicle’s sum insured, the INSURER shall settle the claim on a total loss basis, thereby taking possession of the salvage (the damaged car) and pays the insured the value insured less depreciation.

What is Pro-rata premium clause?

Insurance premium is usually paid on an annual basis from the inception of the policy. Where this is not practicable, payment can be made in installments. However, when a loss or damage occur, the insured will be expected to pay the premium for the remaining period before the claim can be settled and the policy is then extended to a full year cover.

What is Betterment?

Betterment is an improvement on your car that makes the car better than it was before a loss. Insurance is intended to put the insured back in the position he was just before a loss, without any extra gain or benefit whatsoever. E.g. Painting the whole car rather than just the affected part, in which case a certain percentage of the cost will be borne by the insured.
